Emu recaptured after escape in Chilton County
Esmeralda the emu lives in Jemison. Wednesday morning, she managed to escape. She returned home a short time later. Esmerelda is one of Sue Sanford's dozens of pets and one of her two emus. Ursula is Esmerelda's sister. Sanford says, “She is quieter than her sister. She's very affectionate. She likes to peck at shiny things. Like she would go for your earrings really quick. Pretty much, she likes to be around people, and when she's on the loose, she doesn't like to be around people.” Esmerelda is also the adventurous one. She escaped Wednesday morning for the third time. She went on the run a few years ago and again just last month. Each time, Sanford puts out a BOLO on social media. Sanford says, “I get a lot of comments because now she's very well-known from December. So, of course, right away, people say, not again!” It's important to get the word out quickly because, according to the Hollie Colahan, Deputy Director of the Bimingham Zoo, emus can move. “They don't fly, but they have very well-developed, long legs, they're very strong legs and can run really fast.” They can go as fast as 30 miles an hour. But thankfully, this time, Esmerelda decided to return on her own. Sanford says, “I'm very happy, but she's not getting out of there again until we move.” Sanford says she's moving to Plantersville soon to give Ursula, Esmerelda and her menagerie of other animals more space.
