In 1987, Huna Tlingit and other carvers crafted a 22-foot Sitka spruce dugout canoe using traditional methods. Named Yáxwch'i Yaakw, (Sea Otter Canoe), it reflects a canoe style used by Tlingit hunters for centuries. Canoes were vital to the coastal Tlingit who depended on them for hunting, fishing, trading and warfare. Today, tribal members continue to journey to ceremonies and events in handcrafted dugout canoes.
