With an emphatic 12 351 units sold in September, Toyota has now amassed a total of 100 319 units sold in 2018 so far. The September sales also translated into a remarkable market share of 24.9%.

While more than 50% of the Toyota sales came through the passenger segment, South Africa’s favourite LCV model Hilux topped the charts again with 3 943 units sold. As the country’s most loved bakkie, the Hilux sold 927 units more than its closest segment competitor. The Hilux has sold 30 524 units year-to-date, which equates to about 30% of total Toyota sales year-to-date. Not to be left out, the Land Cruiser Pick-up also performed strongly in the bakkie segment with an impressive 178 units sold. Also key to the total LCV sales of 5 421 was Quantum, recording a total of 1 287 units sold.

The resilient trio of Auris/Corolla/Quest recorded a total of 1 680 units while the Fortuner continued its segment leadership with 1 345 units sold. Also punching above the 1 000 mark was Yaris with a laudable total of 1 111 units – 227 units up from the previous month. Luxury SUVs, including Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (97) and Land Cruiser 200 (71) as well as Lexus NX (12), RX (12) and LX (8) also fared well in the month of September.

From the truck front, Hino recorded a total of 403 sales – the highest year-to-date. The Hino 300 and 500 Series both produced class-leading performances achieving 30.5% and 29% market share, respectively in the MCV and HCV segments. Overall, Hino recorded a 15.9% market share and even moved from second to first in Customer Experience (CE).

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa, Calvyn Hamman, says:

“We are quite excited and grateful to our customers, whom we see as loyal brand ambassadors, that Toyota has sold more than 1 228 units more in September compared to the same month in 2017. With a total market share of 24.9%, we are truly proud of our Dealer Network and can only encourage them to continue creating customer smiles and never to be complacent. We appreciate sterling efforts of our fleet owners and car rental companies for their continued support and loyalty.”

Commenting on sales, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) says that the figures reflected a difficult and subdued economic environment. The total sales of 49 670 units showed a decline of 974 vehicles or a fall of 1,9% compared to the 50 644 vehicles sold in September last year, concludes Naamsa.
