As we all know, plants are a wonderful addition to any space and South Africa is home to some of the world’s most unique biodiversity.

However, whether you’re an avid green thumb or just starting out, Mother Nature has some species that are simply out of this world. There are some plants that come with weird smells, are carnivorous or come in shapes that look unlike any other. We’ve rounded up some plants from around the globe that truly are something to behold

Corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanium)

Starting off with a bang, the corpse flower gets its name because of the odour it releases. If you get anywhere close to this species, you’ll know because it reeks of decay and well, corpses. The rare plant is part of the arum species and is known for it’s large flower bloom that only happens every six to 15 years or so.

Night-Blooming Cereus (Epiphyllum Oxypetalum)

If you ever thought you were shy or reclusive, spare a thought for this flower that only blooms once a year. The nocturnal plant species (which can refer to around 10 variants) will usually bloom for a single night during the warmer months.

Queen of the Andes (Puya raimondii)

A name fit for a regal plant, this variant is one of the largest of the bromeliad family. The Queen of the Andes is a rare plant hailing from Bolivia, but it can reach up to 15m. This majestic species is endangered and it’s known to take up to a century to fully bloom!

Bleeding heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis)

Perfect for your Valentine, this plant gets its name for it’s unique and recognisable heart-shaped blooms. The beautifully distinct plant is native to parts of Siberia, China, Korea and Japan. It usually blooms in the early spring or summer and will most likely die when the heart of summer has arrived. Do note, these plants are toxic and all parts of the plant are considered poisonous to humans, pets and livestock.
