In 1910, Sir Nicholaas Frederic De Waal of, who at the time was the first administrator of the Cape Province, ordered for a road linking Hout Bay to Noordhoek peaks to be established.  In 1915 and 1916, with the use of convict effort, construction was underway on either end of Hout bay and Noorhoek respectively. On Saturday the 6 of May 1922, Chapman's Peak Drive was sanctioned for public use by the Governor of the Union of South Africa, His Royal Highness, Prince Arthur of Connaught. Since then Chapman's Peak Drive has undergone a series of reconstructions to enhance the safety and comfort of travellers. Modern Chapman's Peak Drive has a plethora of attractions like view points and picnic spots for visitors to utilize. It is also a excellent venue for photography, after all it is one of the world's most famous marine drives. Hiking trails are also available for the nature lovers starting at the old Silvermine nature reserve all the way to the summit of Chapman's Peak.
