The snail, scientifically known as Achatina fulica, is native to east Africa.

Although they are not poisonous they are capable of transmitting human diseases, especially when their mucus is used in topical treatments or they are eaten raw.

The species has been blamed for several dog deaths after they were accidentally consumed by pets.

African land snails are considered significant pests and are listed as one of the world's most invasive alien species.

Adults can grow up to 10 cm high and more than 20 centimetres long and they are known to consume vast amounts of vegetation.

Snail mucus has been heralded as a go-to ingredient for skincare products

Snail mucus or serum has been heralded as a go-to ingredient for skincare products in recent years.

Big beauty brands such as Napoleon Perdis and Immunocologie have started adding it to their anti-aging face creams.

The snail serum reportedly plumps the skin, decreases wrinkles, fade dark spots and lessen the appearance of scars.

The snail facial was pioneered in Tokyo's Clinical Salon and was branded as the Celebrity Escargot Course, with the Japanese salon charging £161 for the procedure.

The salon claims that the mucus contains highly beneficial proteins that benefit the skin.
