The Japanese super-mini was first introduced in 1977 and replaced the Daihatsu Consorte. The first generation ran from 1977 to 1983 in the guise of a five-door hatchback. It was front-wheel drive and powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. The Charade was a big hit in Japan, a huge seller in Chile, as well as being the first Daihatsu vehicle to be exported to the UK. The Charade was reintroduced in 2003 but under the badge of the Daihatsu Mira, which has also been discontinued. While it can’t compete with small cars of today, during its time it was an efficient and affordable small city car.
