Description: | Shorebird with a fine upcurved bill. |
Adult: | Largely white with bold black markings on upperparts. |
Juvenile: | Resembles adult, but black areas are dark brown and scapulars are mottled. |
Similar Species: | Differs from Black-winged Stilt by blue legs and black-and-white wings. |
Behavior: | Social. Feeds by walking through shallow water sweeping bill from side to side. Frequently swims and often up-ends like a duck. |
Habitat: | Shallow wetlands, lake shores, and river banks. |
Food: | Invertebrates. |
Nest: | Colonial; ground scrape lined and rimmed with vegetation. |
Eggs: | 50 mm, 3-4, greenish gray, dark red-brown and grayish-purple spots. |
