Emus are big flightless birds with a long neck and a plumage of thick, shaggy feathers.

Emus have small wings that can be hard to see under their long feathers, and they have strong legs that help them run very fast.

In this video, we see how stripy emu chicks hatch out of big blue eggs, and then grow quickly into tall, strong adults.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Can you name any other types of flightless birds?
  2. 2.Can you describe the differences between baby emus and adult emus?
  3. 3.Who is responsible for looking after emu eggs and chicks: the mother or the father? What do they do to keep them safe?
  4. 4.Female emus do a special call to attract males. Can you think of any other bird calls? What do they sound like? Why do you think birds sing?
