Bafana Bafana rise in FIFA world rankings

Bafana Bafana have moved up to 58th in the world, eight places up from where they started the tournament.

Bafana Bafana have risen in Fifa rankings after a stellar showing at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations over the past few weeks.

In a press release, the world body of football announced the biggest risers and fallers in the world rankings after the CAF Afcon and AFC Asian Cup.

Bafana Bafana have moved up to 58th in the world, eight places up from where they started in the tournament.

The press release added that there was no movement in the top 10 teams but there was plenty further below, more than 10 teams across Asia and Africa moving up at least 10 places in the rankings.

“Amongst the African sides, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), 39th, up 10, reap the rewards of their continental triumph on home soil, secured following an eventful tournament campaign,” read the Fifa statement.

“Beaten finalists Nigeria, 28th, up 14, make significant strides but are no match for the Angola side they ousted in the last eight, 93rd, up 24, who are the biggest climbers in the latest instalment of the global ranking.”

AFC Asian Cup winners Qatar were one of the biggest risers overall and shot up the world rankings, to 37th, moving up 21 places.

Other impressive risers in the rankings include Equatorial Guinea who moved up 9 places to 79th and Namibia, who moved up to 107th which is 8 places from where they were. Senegal, despite their penalty shoot out loss to eventual winners to the Ivory Coast, moved up to 17th, their best ever ranking.
