| Evertime you post pictures Andrew, I think my next holiday I have to travel to south africa. Are snakes allowed to catch and herp them, or do you need some special licence?

| Fabian - Andrew and I live in the same area of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. This is the only province in this country where you do not need permits to collect and keep indigenous snakes. Although you cannot collect in certain conservancy areas of course and also we do require permits for Python natalensis and Bitis gabonica. Everything else is legal, we are very lucky, you can catch snakes like this every day. | |

Has anyone breeding this H.haemachatus in captivity before ? I have no data on record.
So far it is believed they do not breed easily ?
I also have heard that this animals is also not very intelligent. | |

| Markus - yes they are eating the mice with the previous owner ...As for the spitting , Nothing so far , but I have not had time to piss them off yet These animals have been in captivity some time before I receive them so maybe they are calming down . Will let you know .. | |

| Really nice animals Andrew! I have a couple of Hemachatus myself. I got 2.1. but now 1.1. Unfortunatly one male died. He was a WC male. Together with my female he was from South Africa (East London). I don't know the locality from the male that I still have. The female is doing fine and has eaten 2 mice today. I hope to breed this species in the future. They are such wonderfull animals to keep. Both animals are banded. I like those more than the one colored ones.

| Rinkhals neonates tend to take frogs easier than pinks but they do take pinks. I have a friend who keeps almost only rinkhals here in Joburg and he has bred them too. I believe these snakes occur in regions where it falls below freezing point in winter. The occupy a range of habitats but it seems they prefer moist grassland where frogs and mice are abundant. These bandeds are also found around Harrysmith. Nice going Andrew. You sure have an eye for beutiful snakes bud. It feels great knowing that these and bergadders got their names from my mother language Afrikaans which is slowly dissapearing. | |
