📚Baby/Children’s Book of the Week: # 3 ~ The Mitten [a Ukrainian Folktale]📚

in #parenting6 years ago

Welcome to week 3 of our reading journey!

If you're lucky you will already be familiar with this week’s author, Jan Brett. She writes and illustrates children’s books, adapting folktales from cultures all over the world from Europe to Africa.

I must admit, I didn’t stumble upon her until about 8 years ago whilst attending story time at a local library with our youngest son. We have since, enjoyed many of her books, and I’m thrilled to be reading them again to Freyja. This is one of our favorites and timely for us, since we have seen our fair share of snow so far this winter.

Reading aloud to your child is a wonderful shared activity to promote language development and early literacy skills in a fun and stimulating way, and as Dr. Seuss would say:

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”
~ Dr. Seuss

The Mitten” is a delightful Ukrainian Folktale about a boy named Nicki who asks his Baba or Grandmother for a pair of mittens as white as the snow. As you may expect, Nicki soon loses one but what happens next is quite... unexpected...

Along come many animals seeking shelter from the cold…

A rabbit came hopping by.
He wiggled in next to the mole.

Simply beautiful illustrations, the drawings pictorially show which animal is going to snuggle in the mitten on the following page.

Can your child point to them? What do you think will happen next?

How many animals fit in the mitten and does Nicki get it back?

You’ll just have to read the book to find out!

No lyrical rhyming with this one, but it’s an excellent example of cause and effect that is sure to amuse both young and old.

Be sure to check-out the above activities courtesy of JanBrett.com and Homeschoolcreations.com for fun ideas including rhyming and matching activities, letter tracing, crafts and coloring pages.

Purchase from Amazon or borrow from your local library.

I hope you enjoy our choices as much as we do and if there are any that you’d like to see featured, please let me know.

I sometimes read that book to my daughter too :-)

@redwellies, first of all, I love your red wellies on the doorstep! And, secondly, I love hearing about great books for all ages.

Thank you :) The small ones were my original red wellies when I was a toddler, then all our kids wore them :) I blogged about it here :)

And its never too early or late to start reading with kids, it's fun to be able to share suggestions on here. I'll have to look for one about an alpaca ;)

Looks cute. Nice illustrations too.

The illustrations are amazing in this and her other books too and yes, the story is very cute and a great adaptation :)

Lund’s like such a sweet and charming story

Yes, it really is. The illustrations really bring the story to life :)

Thanks This will be a nice book for my kids I hope they have it in the library. Thanks for sharing. I think this is a great idea to promote such books on steemit. Way to go. God Bless. Peace and Love.

Thank you so much. I hope that fellow Steemians find these posts helpful for ideas on what to read with their kids :) If your library doesn't have this book of Jan's, I can recommend any that they do have :). "Hedgie's Surprise" is another great one and will probably be featured at some point :)
