Frilled Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii)

Frilled Lizard (Latin Chlamydosaurus kingii) belongs to the family of agamates and is a truly unique species. These lizards live in new Guinea and in northwestern Australia.

A distinctive feature of females is the length of their torso, which is much smaller than that of males, for them the standard will be 0.8-1 m. The range of colors varies from dark brown to yellowish. As for the tail of a lavender lizard, it is disproportionately huge - 2/3 of the entire lizard.

But the most characteristic feature of this lizard is its fold, enveloping the head in the form of a hood. Despite her majestic image, she is a great hunter. The sharp claws of a Frilled Lizard allow her to catch spiders, insects, small lizards and get the eggs of birds.

The habitat of this lizard is a tree. Anticipating the danger, she opens her bright collar and takes up the fighting stand: leaning on her hind legs and hissing, the lizard strikes the ground with a powerful and rhythmic blow.

Occupying a position on a hill, a frilled lizard opens its collar up to 30 cm wide and seems a threat to even the most serious rival.

With a real threat, she can run off on her hind legs, using the tail as a counterweight. With the help of her collar, she can stabilize her body temperature: during the heat, she can hide behind them, and in the cool time, turn the large surface of the trunk toward the sun.

The male calls the female with nods. After successful mating, the female placental lizard lays 8-14 eggs. The best environment for their further development will be raw sand. After an incubation period of 10 weeks, small lizards are born.
