Early in the history of the U.S., Robert Goodloe Harper made a famous statement: “Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute.”
Today, as the 116th Congress was seated, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was elected to be House speaker for the second time. Along with that, she channeled Harper in a conversation with reporters.
Pelosi was asked whether Democrats would accept “even a dollar” for construction of Trump’s border wall, the bone of contention between Democrats and the administration in a budget battle that centers on funding a wall on the Mexican border.
“A dollar? A dollar? Yeah, one dollar,” Pelosi joked.
But she changed her mind a short time later. “We’re not doing a wall. Does anybody have any doubt about that? We are not doing a wall. So that’s that. It has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with: The wall is an immorality between countries. It’s an old way of thinking [and] it isn’t cost-effective.”
House Democrats will try to push through a spending package to fund government operations. However, the bill will likely die in the Senate or be vetoed by the President without wall funding.
Earlier, Trump congratulated Pelosi on her victory in a statement to reporters in the White House briefing room.
