Johannesburg Development Agency inspect Patterson Park’s progress

NORWOOD – Patterson Park is 22 per cent complete and will be fully complete by February 2020.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has conceded that they are happy with the progress thus far at the long-awaited Patterson Park construction project in Norwood.

Officials from the agency visited the site to inspect the progress, and according to Development Manager Celestine Mouton, the project is currently 22 percent complete.

Mouton said they expect it to be fully complete by February next year, with a handover to the client expected to be done in March.

New facilities have been built and old ones revamped, she said.

According to the manager, the multipurpose centre will comprise a library, craft centre, tennis pavilion, swimming pool, gym, an administration building and courts for basketball and netball.

“We have a six-aside soccer field, as well as a bigger one with full-scale ground, and we also have a half Olympic size swimming pool, which will cater for competitions as well,” said Mouton.

“I’m confident that the project is on track and all is well regarding the construction. We had given ourselves until December to complete it, but we have extended the deadline to February to allow contractors to deal with little things, such as the slabs.”

About 140 contractors are on site, with 40 local labourers and 16 SMMEs working on the site according to the developers.

Mouton said they have also dealt with the issue of flooding and hope that will be a thing of the past. Norwood is one of the oldest areas in Johannesburg and flooding has been a major challenge for various households. Mouton said they have tried to ensure that they enable water to flow freely when it rains but must wait until it rains to see if that remains a challenge.

The agency’s spokesperson Susan Munyayi, who was also part of the site visit, said residents can expect state of the art facilities when it is complete.
