I have to admit I cannot help screaming when I saw these amazing sushi art. These are popular nowadays, which reminds me another form of sushi art, the nyotaimori.

It is common for us to have food in plate, while nyotaimori is a Japanese practice using the naked female body as a container to serve food (most of the food are sushi) to the customers. It is a controversial topic for people. Some people think it is a way to admire the beauty of human body which can stimulate the desire for people to eat. However, others argue that it is  indignity for female.

This practice started more than 400 years ago in Japan, which is the product in a society full of male chauvinism. However, in modern Japanese dietary conception, they take this practice as a combination of physical enjoyment and cultural experience. For one thing, tasting the food is not the full meaning to customers; for another thing, nyotaimori is representative of the cultural connotation. In Japan, there is also another saying; eating food off a female naked body will help men build a strong body. Some people deem that it is an excuse for this kind of abnormal diet culture.

As matter of fact, it is not an easy task to be a nyotaimori, the selecting and training procedure is very strict. The basic requirement is the female must be virgins, because Japanese men think that only virgins have the purity inwardly and outwardly in order to stimulate the appetite. Most of the nyotaimoris are between 18 to 25 years old. In addition, the female should have good looking white and smooth skin and a good body shape. The female cannot be too thin, because costumers think it lacks sex appearance. Also,a female who is the “A” type is competent for this work. Generally speaking, for Japanese, the person who has “A” blood type is gentle, stable and patient. It is good to keep the sushi fresh.

After the selection, the nyotaimoris have to go through a set of training. The traditional way to build their perseverance is by putting six eggs on their body in difference places. They have to stay in the same still posture at least four hours.

During their practice, if one of the eggs drop down; they have no choice but to redo it. During their practice, the coach will pour water on their body to test them. After their training, some the nyotaimori feel stiff as a stone.

Before nyotaimoris start to work, they have to clean up themselves thoroughly for 90 minutes. Nyotaimoris take at least four showers to clean them up. No fragrance is allowed, because the scents of perfume will cover the smell of the food.

Why are there still some people to take this challenging job? This is because of the temptation of money. Nyotaimori can earn at least 50$ per hour, according to Naked Sushi.wix.com. Some of them think it is an art for customers to experience a different culture; several of the nyotaimoris have no choice to have income to support their life and study.

No matter what are these nyotaimoris’ intentions are, we have to admit this is a part of a culture. We can have different ideas about it; however, we should respect it.
