This is the coolest event I’ve heard about in a long time… 🏎️Kicking off it’s 3rd season, the Rally Jameel began today. It is Saudi Arabia's groundbreaking off-road navigation rally exclusively for female drivers, marking a significant milestone in the country's progress since lifting the driving ban on women in 2017. Here’s what I’ve learned. ↓ ▷HOW IT WORKS This event is not about speed but about navigation and precision driving. • 👯♀️Teams of two women (a driver and co-driver) utilize cutting-edge navigation equipment, a digital road book, and compasses to compete along a predetermined route through Hail, AlUla, Umluj, Yanbu, and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh. • The entire race spans 1600km across the desert and includes five stages of between 300 and 500km per day, only revealed to the drivers the night before each stage. • Driving unmodified off-road vehicles, they will navigate through hidden waypoints to gather points, and the team that finishes with the highest number of points wins. ↓ ▷ORGANIZERS AND IMPACT In line with the Kingdom’s transformational Vision 2030, AbduL Latif Jameel Motors, the authorized distributor of Toyota Motor Corporation in Saudi Arabia, announced and organized Rally Jameel as a pioneering initiative for women's motorsports with its inaugural event taking place in 2022. Hassan Jameel, Deputy President and Vice Chairman of Abdul Latif Jameel said, “…we are committed to nurturing local talent and accelerating women’s participation in sports – particularly motorsports…Rally Jameel is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s historic transformation and the opportunities that can be found in the country.” 🌍 A shining success, this year’s event has ballooned and features 108 drivers from 38 countries, up from 82 drivers from 25 countries in last year’s edition and 34 drivers from 15 countries in its inaugural year. ↓ Im not going to lie, this sounds like so much fun. Where is Netflix to make this into a series?! We love seeing Females in Motorsport👌🏿 For more news and analysis on the emerging sports economies of Africa and the Middle East, check out Playbook - Sports Business for Emerging Markets. __________ Photo: Rally Jameel #linkedinsports #sportsbusiness #rallyjameel #womeninmotorsports #internationalwomensday

Wow! This is not the #SaudiArabia of my childhood. Great to see. As an expat on a U.S. passport, I had next to no interactions with Saudis, secluded in a gated community where only American citizens could live. Recently, on #coaching youth in #Kuwaut, was glad to hear a teen boy be inspired by the progress on gender equity in neighboring Saudi Arabia. It was a far more enlightened view than I encounter in some board rooms in the U.S. This is what I love about working with youth and young professionals: their hope, vision, courage. Just two weeks prior at an #entrepreneurship event at CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center), discussing #banking & #venture in context of #SVB, a female speaker had made a derisive comment on Swiss banks “taking Saudi money.” I thought about Saudi classmates at Sloan who are change agents. Should we really be making people feel almost criminal in #innovation spaces? Shouldn’t we support progress & change? It saddens me when entire countries & regions are written off like in that comment that, for me, ended up defining that event & even that space. We have a long way to go on #belonging & #psychologicalsafety. In thought of that comment at the recent #Coronation there did not seem to be problem with imperial actions of the British empire that led to widespread harm https://lnkd.in/en3rdy2C, how that wealth was acquired, nor inheirited power being celebrated. Why do we have these double standards? Ironically, it is the collective South Asian experience of massive value extraction from our lands by a highly process oriented Colonial power that makes South Asians thrive as immigrants. We follow the money but also have learned these systems of power. If you had $45 trillion extracted by Colonizers https://lnkd.in/eAfk5Dza & still survive or thrive, that takes skills. It is something I intentionally incorporate into #coaching for high schoolers in Gulf Arab states anticipating transition to U.S. or U.K. education systems for college/university. It is a new #mindset and skillset to transition countries, be a minority, and deliver in structured systems and immediate accountability. In comparison Gulf Arab societies have deep relationships and rely heavily on trust or implicit understanding. It even shows up in language and brains of Arabic speakers: https://lnkd.in/emWzWH7R. It is a massive culture shock to leave that for Anglo-Saxon or Germanic cultures. The past cannot be undone. We can choose to embrace a global economy. We can choose humanism. We *can* choose to build a better future. We can celebrate successes. We can identify and support those with vision and the courage to make things happen.
Saudi Arabia is readying to host its first women’s-only motoring event. Called Rally Jameel, the event consists of 34 teams from 15 countries and takes place from March 17 to 19. It will feature both beginners and seasoned veterans in competition. The 900-kilometre race, which is being held over three days, will start in the north-central city of Hail, taking in the sites of Al-Qassim city and then heading to the capital, Riyadh, via hidden checkpoints and challenges. Motorsport racer Dania Akeel, who was the first Saudi woman to participate in the Dakar Rally in 2022, says she hopes the event will help women to feel more at ease while driving. “Rally Jameel inspires a sense of adventure and discovery. This rally will support the increasing number of women on the road to become comfortable behind the wheel and experience driving in a completely different way to driving on the road.” In preparation, she’s competed in two rounds of the FIA Cross Country Bajas World Cup, which has given her more off-road training. She’s also done physical training, including strength and cardiovascular work as well as yoga. "For myself, this sport provides a fulfilling sense of adventure and allows me to expand my view of the world by crossing these beautiful and vast landscapes," she says. "I hope others feel fulfilled after the experience too." Elsewhere in the region, the UAE is represented by Atefa Saleh, while Oman will have Sanaa Al Shekaili and Halima Al Balushi behind the wheel. Al Shekaili was the first Omani racer to participate in the 2020 Middle East Rally Championship, finishing in third place. “Rally Jameel is my chance to renew the love I’ve had of challenges since my childhood, especially in the field of motor racing, where I have the ability to challenge myself and the other competitors in this distinguished GCC women-only event,” she says.
