Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. a division of Toyota Motor Corporation has halted production as its mired in controversy over falsifying over several decades about passanger safety data of several of its models. This has come out after VW also admitting its diesel engine data over mileage was compromised and had to suspend production and made to pay huge fines. It’s unfortunate that such leading and most admired brand’s commit to undesired practices and falsifying information leading to passengers safety and security. There was a scandal about passengers safety airbags and millions of airbags needed to be replaced by manufacturers. In today’s world one needs to be competitive but not at the cost of passengers safety.

Toyota subsidiary, Daihatsu, has announced that it will cease shipping all models as a result of a safety scandal. The decision comes after Daihatsu discovered that it had been employing uncertified inspectors for final vehicle checks. This incident follows a similar ordeal that affected Toyota last year. Daihatsu has vowed to halt shipments for inspection purposes and to implement measures to prevent any future safety breaches. However, the company's production, sales, and reputation are expected to face significant consequences as a result of this decision. "A great challenge of life: Knowing enough to think you're doing it right, but not enough to know you're doing it wrong."
It is the airbags, silly. "In 2017, Japan’s Takata Corp. filed for bankruptcy after almost a decade of recalls and lawsuits related to its airbag inflators, which have been linked to several deaths and scores of injuries around the world because they can rupture and send metal fragments flying." And now it is Daihatsu's turn. Okay, none of the models so far are exported to Singapore, because we are too small a market for many models, and the COEs too high for Daihatsu to get a foothold. "Last year, Toyota’s truck-making subsidiary, Hino Motors, admitted to falsifying emissions data. Hino, which is 50.5% owned by Toyota, said in August 2022 that engine exhaust values were falsified for vehicles that were manufactured as far back as 2003." Okay, last year it was truck emissions, silly. None of this implicates Toyota directly, but Toyota has an outsized presence in the Japanese carmaking industry. So it is going to be more interventionist on its suppliers and subsidiaries - a lot of them have been fudging tests before Toyota took a majority stake.

Toyota Motor Corp is temporarily suspending shipments of 10 vehicle models following issues with certification for some diesel engines by supplier Toyota Industries Corp. This suspension comes after an investigation found irregularities in horsepower-output testing and is the latest issue to plague Toyota, following a separate announcement by subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co regarding manipulated test results. Production of the affected models has been halted in Japan and will be stopped for impacted overseas models, with production expected to restart on a country-specific basis. The impact on earnings is currently unknown, and the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will start on-site inspections. #AsiaRisk #SupplyChainIssues #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gC_fbBhG

The Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. scandal at the (100%) owner Toyota Motor Corporation group is likely to, “force changes to the group’s sprawling web of affiliates and suppliers”, and have a marked impact on affiliated brands like Hino Trucks, Mazda Motor Corporation, Suzuki Motor Corporation etc. With electric vehicles’ simplified architecture, “if engines are no longer how you differentiate automakers and brand, then maybe this kind of large scale can be a bit of a liability”. Nor does it help that the Japanese formation has been a laggard in electrification. I see a further wave of consolidation, pruning and re-organising of legacy automotive formations on similar lines as the western mega formations like Stellantis. Moreover, with limited IP and differentiation in the EV era, we may well see a significant reduction in consumer brands and models on offer. What do you think is the future trajectory of automotive industry? A crash test scandal is prompting changes at Toyota

Toyota's Daihatsu to halt all vehicle shipments, in widening safety scandal ! 🔥🧯🚒 👩🚒 -"Daihatsu produced 1.1 million vehicles over the first 10 months of the year, nearly 40% of those at overseas sites, according to Toyota data. It sold some 660,000 vehicles worldwide over that period and accounted for 7% of Toyota's total sales ! -" It's very sad to observe these deliberate management fraud/corrupt toxic neoliberalism type behaviours and practices, but just look at other current failures within the Japanese government and other recent global allegedly 🎭 "best-practice" cultured organisations ! 🐘🕸🧩🔬🔍🕵 IMHO https://lnkd.in/guKzNpE6? #Toyota #Daihatsu #Test #Certification #Failures #Nippon #Mitsubishi #Toshiba #Nissan (2) #Hino #Takata #KobeSteel #Neoliberalism #FutureofWork 😥😖 #Aging #Retiring #Employees #Artisans #Takumi #Experts #Skills #KnowledgeTransfer #SupplyChain #Impacts #NeoliberalOrthodoxy #Neoliberalism #Greed #GlobalProblem #ToxicBehaviours #CostCutting #LeadershipMatters

“Toyota Raize Caught In Rigged Safety Test Scandal” Saturday, May 20, 2023 “Remember the scandal surrounding Daihatsu rigging the crash test of a couple of DNGA models such as the Toyota Vios and Wigo? Well, it’s more widespread than anyone first thought.” “Like a thread unraveling, Toyota and Daihatsu says that the Raize is a model that’s also affected by a similar, but unrelated rigged safety test. During an internal investigation, it’s been revealed that Daihatsu, which supplies the Raize on an OEM basis to Toyota, improperly certified it for the UN-R135 test.” “The UN-R135 test is a side-impact test which has a utility pole-like object impacted against the side of the vehicle at a speed of 32 km/h from a distance of 254 mm, with the vehicle angled at 75 degrees to the left and the right.” “Both left and right tests must be performed. It was revealed that while the passenger side (left) was tested in presence of witnesses, the driver’s seat side (right) simply used the data on the left side.” “So far, both Toyota and Daihatsu say that only the hybrid version of the Raize is affected. A total of 22,329 Daihatsu Rocky HEV units are affected and a total of 56,111 Toyota Raize HEV units are affected. No word if the non-hybrid version of the Raize is included, nor if those assembled in other plants like the one in Indonesia.” “Toyota and Daihatsu have suspended the sale and shipment of Raize and Rocky models starting today. In addition, Toyota has begun a company-wide reexamination.” https://lnkd.in/eathnYdk?
