Description:

Picrates Cenchria - The Brazilian Rainbow Boa. A species native to Southern and Central America. This is a terrestrial species of snake which is famous for is its bright and colorful patterns as well as it's breathtaking iridescent sheen.

Size:

Full grown adult rainbow boas reach an average length of 4 to 6 feet. As with most snakes, females will typically reach a larger size than males.

Temperament:

Consistent and gentle handling is crucial to cultivating a relationship with any pet snake. Giving them adequate time and attention will go a long way to developing a relationship of mutual trust. With that in mind, rainbow boas have a tendency to be docile pets, but do remember that this is a snake - they do not rely as heavily on eyesight as much as they do heat when determining what is prey. Sudden and unexpected movements from a handler can result in accidental bites and any snake owner should be prepared for this possibility.

Care:

As with any reptile, consistent and proper temperature is an absolute must. All Rainbow boas should be kept within a temperature of 70-80 Fahrenheit - ideally with a temperature gradient within their enclosure to allow them to adjust themselves according to their comfort. The ideal way of doing this is by utilizing heating pads, but overhead lighting can also be incorporated. These snakes are sensitive to high temperatures and prolonged exposure to temperatures above 90 can be fatal - so take consideration of this when purchasing one. Rainbow Boas also require high humidity. Regular misting should be used to maintain a humidity level of 75-90 percent. This can also be achieved by using a substrate which holds moisture. E.G. coconut fiber. This is also ideal, as in my experience these snakes do like to burrow for security and to regulate humidity. You should definitely use temperature and humidity gauges within your snakes enclosure to ensure they always are being kept at optimal conditions.

Rainbow boas are well suited to an all rodent diet, with the size of their prey being determined by the size and age of the individual snake, although other feeders can be utilized as well.

Lifespan:

When all their needs are met, in captivity, rainbow boas can easily live upwards of 20 years.
