If South Africans lived out of this world, this year’s Durban July proved our fashion might just be the talk of the galaxy. Take a look!

Durban, South Africa (03 July, 2023) — As series, books and billionaires on Twitter keep the idea of life outside of this world well and alive, many of us have entertained the thought of what that would look like. Forget the post-apocalyptic lens in exchange for the fantasy— what would South Africa look like if our cultures took to the big out there? One event that gave us a glimpse of that world came on race day at the Durban July, where all bets were on Afrofuturism at its finest.

While the Durban July is annually earmarked as a sporting event, eyes tend to dart beyond the racetrack come Race Day, largely thanks to the fashion presence. This year’s theme was Out of This World and if we ever get there, we think the stars might just have some competition.

The Young Designer award for this year went to Lwandle Zwezwe from the PMB School of Fashion! She was awarded a study bursary, a travel package to Johannesburg for Fashion Week and more prizes.

Also taking to the fashion podium were two students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Thabiso Ncanana and Andile Nsele who came second and third respectively. Both also earned bursaries for their breathtaking work.
