Chapmans Peak Drive is known as one of the most famous roads in the world and certainly one of the most important touristic attraction around Cape Town. This road was closed for some 3 years due to some fatal accidents caused by rockfall.
A BOT - procedure with the transfer into a toll-road was chosen to redesign for the rockfall protection from the very beginning of the evaluation of concepts to the final design, supporting the geotechnical consultant. Due to the legal situation Geobrugg had to provide comprehensive guarantees for the performance of the supplied barriers, taking into account the very difficult topography. The local representative of Geobrugg was providing logistic support and was assembling the ropes to length and fit with brake rings and swaged loops. Special attention was given to aesthetics. The barriers are placed not only to best serve for effective rockfall protection, but also to be as inconspicous as possible. On time, on December 17th 2003, the road could be reopened to the tourists and local commuters. It was the first time, that this kind of rockfall barriers has been used in South Africa.
