Wood Joints - Biscuit Butt Joint

wood joint dowelled butt joint

In another variation of the doweled joint, the biscuit joint adds a similar form of reinforcement to the inheritantly weak butt joint. Instead of dowels, a biscuit joint consists of thin, oval-shaped pieces of wood glued into the middle of the joint. Most woodworkers buy pre-made biscuits from woodworking supply stores, which usually have a variety of sizes available. Biscuit joints add an incredible amount of strength to an otherwise weak joint. Best part is that the this type of reinforcement is entirely invisible after everything is glued up.

Tools - There's really no getting around the fact that with biscuit joints you'll need some special tools to cut the slots that the biscuits slide into. Namely, a biscuit joiner, or slot cutter. These aren't the most popular tools with DIY builders, since there's really no other use for them other than cutting biscuit joints. However, if you think you might eventually get into building furniture, this could be an important tool for your shop.
