Discover stained glass with Tuesday Rostrum

Linda Mary Angus discovered her love for glass 25 years ago.

CRAFTY Tuesday Rostrum members shouldn’t miss the October luncheon when Linda Mary Angus will discuss the art of stained glass.

Glass is a fascinating subject. Formed by melting silica with stabilisers and a flux at approximately 2 700 degrees Fahrenheit, this substance has been around for thousands of years. It was used as far back as 4 000 BC when the Egyptians produced glass vessels and beads.

It has also religious significance. In medieval times a church’s stained glass windows provided religious instruction to a largely illiterate population. It also became popular within other religions but gradually shifted from being a religious art form to a general form of decoration.

Linda, who hails from Westville, completed a B Social Science at the University of Durban (Howard College) then worked in the health and service sector. Her love of glass developed 25 years ago when she started classes with Durban’s stained glass guru Graham Todd.

For the last 10 years she has worked closely with Graham on many restorations and commissions. Last year she purchased the business from Graham, who has semi-retired.

Linda’s studio is at her home in Glenwood and she has a workshop close to it. Her business, ‘Art Glass and Bevels’ employs two skilled workers who have been in the business for more than 15 years.

She has been involved in major projects in several churches, more than 400 homes, restaurants, pubs and office blocks.

Hear Linda’s fascinating talk and enjoy a great lunch and friendly company at Mbango on Tuesday, October 11 at noon. To book contact Denise Millar at 083 2719163.
