Humpback dolphins thriving in Indo-Pacific region for the first time after decades thanks to Coronavirus

The current pandemic has been a harbinger of relief for the animal kingdom that has been otherwise reeling under the threats imposed by rampant human activities. The latest good news from the marine kingdom is that the humpback dolphin aka the Chinese white dolphin or the pink dolphin due to its special pink-ish colour is back to Hong Kong in huge numbers after the closure of ferry service between Hong Kong and Macau since March 2020.
The humpback dolphin is an endangered species found in the Indo-Pacific region.
Since there was no water traffic for several months due to the lockdown, the marine environment has become congenial for these marine creatures to thrive, play and have a good time of their life span. According to the news reports, the researchers are also concerned about the protection of these dolphins before the ferry service resumes.

Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins belong to the Pearl River estuary. However, the frequency of high-speed boats between Hong Kong and Macau forced them to avoid the route.
Dr Lindsay Porter, a senior research scientist with the University of St Andrews, who has been observing these dolphins since 1993 told news daily that this is a dramatic change since decades as far as the state of these dolphins is concerned, all thanks to the suspension of ferry services.
