This infrared photograph of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, taken on a recent trip to unwind after some very stressful and emotional family events this year, was born on one of the short day hikes through the Royal Natal Park.

Situated in South Africa’s Royal Natal National Park in the Northern Drakensberg, the Drakensberg Amphitheatre is widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliff faces on earth barre none and forms the escarpment of South Africa.

The Drakensberg Amphitheatre is one of the most photographed features of the entire Drakensberg Mountain Range and is undoubtedly a spectacular sight of note. With hikes ranging from beginners to advanced I chose the easy day walk as I was actually on holiday to rest and recoup not climb mountains, but this did not stop me from still getting some beautiful photograph’s with a different touch to them.

Many photographs like this of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre are taken from the bottom of the valley floor close to the Mont-Aux-Sources hotel where one has easy access to short day walks and hikes inside the Royal Natal National Park. I still have much exploring to do of this location in South Africa and will start to tackle this come 2018.

The Drakensberg Amphitheatre itself is over 5 kilometers in length and has cliffs rising approximately 1,220 meters along its entire length. The second tallest waterfall in the world, the Tugela Falls plunges over 948 meters from the top of the Amphitheatre’s cliffs and is still something I have yet to explore myself.

The actual cliff face of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre is approximately three times the size of the total combined area of all the cliff faces in Yosemite’s famous El Capitan, and more than 10 times the size of El Capitan’s most famous face.

I still cannot believe it took me so long to get out to this majestical and beautiful part of the Drakensberg Mountains. I’ve seen and photographed the Southern and Central parts of the Drakensberg Mountains like Giants Castle and Underberg but the Northern Drakensberg Amphitheatre certainly took my breath and away and begged to return to explore more.

I shall return !!!
