Hunting Kudu in Africa

Hunting kudu in Africa, known as the “gray ghost” by many hunters, is a challenge within itself, but to hunt them in the highlands of the Eastern Cape in South Africa remains the most challenging goal for many hunters who come to Africa.

Standing over 5ft tall, the kudu is often compared to that of a North American Elk. The kudu is large, proud, and majestic – astonishingly beautiful with long spiral horns that sets him apart from the other antelope species in Africa.

Not only dubbed ‘gray ghost’ because of its elusive nature, it is also due to the kudu’s coat being gray-brown, with white vertical stripes cascading down the flank. The distinguished white chevron marking between the eyes is another noteworthy characteristic of the kudu.

Rather than exposing themselves to predators in the open savannah, kudu prefer thickets, relying on them for protection. Kudu are browsers, often feeding off the Acacia tree, while in the dryer months taking advantage of succulents such as the spekboom. 

Kudu are often solitary animals. However, they seek out females the closer they get to the rut season. You will see solitary big bulls by themselves until the rut and females will wander off to give birth. 
It is common for bulls to show dominance by fighting other males as well as smashing and breaking vegetation around them.

“The rut season normally starts from the end of April as the bulls start figuring their females out,” observes one of our PHs, “and can sometimes last well into July, depending on the season and the condition they have held.”

Kudu in the Eastern Cape have a hunting season typically from end of May into August while some areas will have them under CAE (Certificate of Adequate Enclosure) or under conservancy which allows for a certain number of animals to be taken off per property.

How to prepare for your kudu trophy hunting experience

“Probably the most important aspect to any spiral hunt is preparation,” says our Huntershill professional hunter. “Understand the conditions you will face, the terrain, and even weather considerations if you hope to stand a chance at bagging a kudu.”

Thankfully, there is no seasonal restriction on kudu hunting in South Africa.

For most areas around the Eastern Cape, distance / long range shooting is key to allow you the best possible chance at bagging yourself a big bull. 

For this reason preparation and selection of your equipment is most important of all. “With the body size of this majestic antelope, and rugged conditions in Africa, a minimum caliber of .270 is required,” advises one of our PHs.

Additional key items to bring along will be things like spotting scope, range finder, and a good carcass tarp for the recovery process. 

Last but not least, be sure to plan your kudu trophy hunt around the African conditions.
