Dendroaspis jamesoni - Angola

Postby Warren Klein » Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:39 pm

Good day SA Reptiles,

On the 20/01/12 I was called out to one of our companies housing areas for a snake sighting. I am located in Soyo, Zaire Province of Northern Angola very near to the Congo river. The information I received was that during a routine refueling operation of the security light generators, the refueling team was confronted by a large green snake as they opened the generator to refuel. The colour green is in the eye of the beholder because most of the time "green snakes" turn out to be Psammophis sp. which are more olive to light brown in my eyes. Once I arrived at the location of the sighting and opened the generator for closer investigation, I discovered that it was in fact a large green snake and none other than the highly venomous Jameson’s Mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni). After much manipulation I eventually managed to remove the Mamba from confines of the generator.

The snake was a female and had a SVL of 1050mm, TL of 1360mm and weighed 180g

This is where I released the Mamba, in suitable habitat away from people.

I'm sure the elapid fans will appreciate this beautiful girl as much as I did.

Stunning snake!
That shot of it curled up in the tree (4th last) is really great.

Great find and some really nice photographs
A Shangaan legend states that any man resting or sleeping in the shade of a baobab will become eccentric and forever be enslaved by Africa and its wilderness, guess it's too late for me.

Superb snake, and not one that you see in many field reports! Great post!

Thanks everyone. We don't find these all that often so when we do it is quite exciting. I just love their bright yellow tails with each scale edged in black, reminds me of fish net stockings.

WW - got some clippings for you too.

That's what I like to hear.

I always see the ones with the black tails from the other side of Africa. These are much prettier.

Great find Warren and amazing shots! I was wondering when you will get one. This would be the subspecies, D, jamesoni jamesoni, right? - Not many people get to see those. Well done!

Thanks guys,

Pythonodipsas, Yes I belive this is D. jamesoni jamesoni, but I'm sure WW can confirm.

WW, You are most welcome, there are at least 3 samples from 3 different specimens of this species waiting for you.

Looking forward to find another one!
